Some assistance dogs alert. Some retrieve. Some keep children close by in unfamiliar places. And then there are dogs like STERLING—who don’t just change a child’s life, but an entire families.
Meet Kade, a fun-loving, imaginative nine-year-old, and his PAWS service dog for children with autism, STERLING. Since joining Kade a year and a half ago, STERLING has been a calming force, a steady companion, and a key to unlocking confidence and independence in Kade’s life.
Finally Sleeping Through the Night
One of the first big differences STERLING made? Sleep.
Before STERLING, sleeping through the night just didn’t happen for Kade. But now, with STERLING curled up at his feet, Kade rests easier. “That was something he always struggled with,” says Kade’s mom, Stephanie. “But ever since STERLING started sleeping with him, he’s been sleeping through the night.”
And better sleep doesn’t just help Kade. The whole family has been able to rest easier.
Staying Safe and Sticking Together
STERLING helps out well beyond bedtime. Whether they’re walking through a crowded museum or exploring a new place, she keeps Kade close and grounded. “We can do more now,” Stephanie shares. “We feel more comfortable going to busy places, knowing he’s not going to wander off.”
STERLING is also trained to do something called “squish,” a deep pressure technique where she gently lays on Kade when he’s overwhelmed. Though they’re still working on bonding in this area, the moments when it clicks are powerful.
A Confidence Booster in Disguise
As Kade and STERLING’s bond grows, Stephanie has noticed big changes in her son.
“He’s more confident in himself,” she says. “He feels more independent, even in areas we weren’t expecting.”
STERLING doesn’t go to school with Kade, but her presence has made a lasting impact. She joins him for speech and occupational therapy, offering quiet support. And even when she’s not right by his side, the confidence she’s helped build still shows. “He walks better with us, stays where he’s supposed to, it’s like he carries that confidence with him,” Stephanie says.
New Adventures Around Every Corner
Since becoming a certified team, Kade’s parents have felt comfortable traveling further than ever with Kade, going on more adventures than ever before. Their first camping trip, road trips to Ohio, visits to the Cincinnati Zoo and the Creation Museum.
Before STERLING, travel felt overwhelming. But now, as long as she’s there, Kade can settle in, and even sleep in a hotel room far from home.
One of their favorite ways to spend time together is right in their backyard pool. STERLING may not be a natural swimmer just yet, but that doesn’t stop her from floating alongside Kade on a raft, soaking up the sun. “It’s really sweet to watch them play in the pool,” Stephanie says.
The Bond That Changed Everything
When Stephanie talks about PAWS, the emotions are clear. “PAWS has been very impactful for our family,” she says, holding back tears.
“Kade and STERLING are best friends,” she says. “She gives him a lot of confidence, and I think he feels better about himself, knowing that she’s around to support him.” She’s shared their story with other families, hoping to spread the word about how much a PAWS service dog like STERLING can do for a family.
