At the start of the day, LILY already knows what’s coming.

As soon as her handler, Crystal, begins her morning routine, LILY is focused and ready. When the work bag comes out, she heads straight for the door, waiting patiently for her vest. By the time they leave the house, LILY understands she’s heading somewhere important.

Somewhere she’s needed.

Starting the Day

At St. Joseph’s Hospital North in Florida, the day begins with a quick check of consults.

Some are for patients; others are for family members or hospital staff. Each request is different, and LILY moves from one to the next with a calm, steady presence.

In one room, she may quietly sit beside a patient, leaning into their hands. In another, she might greet a nurse taking a moment after a long shift. Sometimes, she’s called in after a particularly difficult case—offering support in ways that don’t require words.

No matter where she goes, the response is immediate.

People smile, energy shifts, and the room softens.

As LILY makes her rounds, she moves easily between spaces—patient rooms, hallways, nurses’ stations—meeting people exactly where they are.

Often, LILY seems to sense who needs her the most.

She slows down in quieter moments, staying close during one-on-one visits where her calm presence can make the biggest impact. These are the moments where patients who feel anxious or overwhelmed begin to relax.

But her work isn’t limited to patients.

Hospital staff, too, carry the weight of long hours and emotional situations. A brief visit from LILY can offer a reset—a small but meaningful pause in the middle of a demanding day.

A Moment That Won’t Be Forgotten

Some days bring moments that stay with you.

During an honor walk for a patient who had chosen to donate their organs, LILY walked alongside family, staff, and loved ones in a quiet, emotional tribute.

The patient’s family shared how much their loved one admired dogs and found comfort in their presence. As the walk began, LILY gently made her way to the patient’s son—without direction—and stayed by his side.

Step for step, she walked with him, leaning into him as they moved through the hallway together.

It was a simple, instinctive gesture.

But in that moment, it meant everything.

For the family and staff, it was a moment of connection—one that didn’t need explanation, but was deeply felt by everyone present.

Ending the Day

By the end of the day, LILY has visited with dozens of people. Each interaction can look different, but all are connected by the same purpose.

From quiet moments at a patient’s bedside to brief check-ins with staff, her presence is felt throughout the hospital in ways both big and small.
