A Shared Mission of Service: PAWS and AMVETS Partner to Empower Independence

The soft nudge of a paw. The alert bark when the doorbell rings. For many veterans living with hearing loss or other disabilities, those small moments add up to something life-changing — independence. It’s a gift made possible through Paws With A Cause (PAWS) and our ongoing partnership with American Veterans (AMVETS). 

When a veteran’s service ends, their courage doesn’t. For many, life after the military brings new challenges, including disabilities that can make daily life more difficult to navigate. But thanks to partnerships built on shared service and compassion, like the one between PAWS and AMVETS, veterans across the country are finding new ways to thrive. 

A Life-Changing Partnership 

Each PAWS assistance dog is custom-trained to meet the specific needs of their partner, whether that means alerting to important sounds, retrieving dropped items, opening doors, or providing balance and stability. 

These life-changing partnerships are made possible not only through expert training and care but also through the incredible generosity of organizations like the AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary. Their continued support ensures that more clients receive the highly trained assistance dogs they need to live with independence and peace of mind. 

AMVETS’ Legacy of Support 

For years, the Michigan Chapter of the National AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary has been one of PAWS’ most steadfast and compassionate partners. Their unwavering commitment to people with disabilities has transformed countless lives through financial support, advocacy, and volunteer leadership. 

Most recently, the Michigan Chapter helped secure the National Auxiliary’s sponsorship of the full $35,000 cost to raise, train, and place a PAWS assistance dog for a veteran in Florida—a powerful example of their belief in accessible, life-changing solutions for those who have served our country. 

That sponsorship ensures one more veteran will gain independence through a dog trained to support mobility, hearing, or seizure response needs. It’s a tangible expression of AMVETS’ mission to continue serving veterans long after their military service has ended. 

Building Access and Empowering Change 

The AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary’s impact extends beyond individual dog placements. Their contributions have supported facility improvements and accessibility upgrades across the PAWS campus — changes that allow the organization to serve clients more effectively and meet the evolving needs of both people and dogs. 

From expanded training spaces designed for hands-on learning to accessible walking paths where clients and dogs can safely train together, every improvement reflects an investment in independence and inclusion. 

The Michigan Chapter’s strong local presence also fosters leadership and community engagement. Through grassroots fundraising, awareness events, and volunteer outreach, their members inspire others to get involved, spreading the PAWS mission far beyond Michigan’s borders.
